final project - "who do you think you are?"

i began my project by sending an email to my parents asking them to provide information for my project - i received my answers in person.

i then interviewed both of my parents. i talked with my mom face to face, and my dad over skype (he's currently in romania).

next, i created a family echo family tree. this family tree includes my aunts/uncles/cousins, as well as grandparents/great aunts/uncles, and great grandparents.

i also made a prezi talking about my family and the background and an infographic talking about differences on my mom and dads side.

read THIS blog post by a teacher. i mean actually read it. take it in. think about it. and then, write about it. what do you think about it? what is the teacher trying to say? in your own words explain what "the main event" is.

i do agree with this article, and i really like it. it's nice to finally hear a teacher say something different - something we really need to hear and understand. i think it's super important that students are recognized for their efforts, rather than just the highest numbers. not all students can get hundreds on everything. there are people working their butts off trying to maintain a passing grade, and there are some that get perfect scores without trying, and i believe students should be recognized by their effort. the teacher is trying to say that yes, some certain things we learn in school don't actually matter, but it's the perseverance it takes to finish them that does matter. i think that the "main event" is to be able to get through it all without quitting. as easy or as hard as a class may be, no matter what the grade you get is, the whole point is to be able to get through it all.

3 day weekend... how was it? give me a good story or something funny that happened this weekend. go.

my weekend was amazing! on saturday, i spent the day at the solo/ensemble festival at olathe south high school. i was going to perform there but had to cancel because there were some issues with the copyright of our music. i mostly went to help/support/and listen to my boyfriend's performances and i also heard a handful of other people. we went to ihop in between (photo) and starbucks afterwards. i had church saturday night and sunday. sunday, i also went over to a friends house for dinner and we played catchphrase; i was laughing to the point of crying. monday was mostly a lazy day so i just stayed at home.

tell me all about what your idea is for your stop-motion animation. i need detail. who is going to help you take photos? what props do you need? where do you plan on shooting? explain everything.

my idea is to make a painting using stop motion animation that features the painting creating itself, no person in it. it would include the supplies getting itself out of the box, opening up, and pouring itself into a plate or palette. then, the brush would begin to do the work (though i don't know how to make a brush float in midair so i might just have the paint do it without the brush). i don't know if i'll need someone to help me. i might do the painting while i have a friend take the photos. i'll probably shoot this at my house - it'll make things a million times easier because i won't have to stay after school or move supplies around.

tell me about your weekend.

my weekend was fairly eventful. friday i didn't do much - i was pretty tired so i just went home and slept. saturday, i worked on homework and went to an evening church service. on sunday, i went to church of the resurrection (i don't normally go there) because my boyfriend was performing in their service. after that i went to my own church and then to work. work was super slow (thank god) because it easter. after i got off, i hung out with my boyfriend for a couple of hours and then went home.

what do you love most about this time of the year?

the whether is starting to warm up and i can spend more time outside. also, i feel like school isn't as rigorous as earlier in the year (this small chunk right before finals gets close is nice). i also like this time of the year because you know you're getting close to the end. less than two months and it's time for summer break.

what do you know about photography and/or photo editing? do you take photos? how do you take photos? do you edit photos before posting them on social media? how do you edit them? explain any background or knowledge you have about photography and photo editing. do you like it? do you have any interest?

i really don't know much about photography and photo editing. yes, i take photos; however, they're generally for my own enjoyment (example: snapchat) and memories. i usually don't edit my photos or put any filters on it whether i keep it for myself or post it online. i also don't have much knowledge of photography and/or photo editing. photography and photo editing does seem interesting for me, but it's not something i would do as anything more than just for fun/for myself.

tell me about your spring break.

i really didn't do much over spring break - most of it was spent at home. the first day i hung out with my boyfriend and our friend. we went to two parks and our other friends house. the first friday of break, my dad arrived from romania (he left to go back this morning. he'll be back around the end of the school year). we spent the entire week with him eating out, shopping, and just spending time at home. during the week i also hung out with my boyfriend again as well as some other friends a few days later. though i didn't do much, i was glad i got to stay home and relax.

what are you doing over spring break?

i really don't have any plans over spring break (i know i'm not going anywhere). however, my dad's been on a business trip in romania for three months (he left on january 6th) and he's going to come over during spring break (on friday), and he'll be going back to romania next sunday. i'm pretty excited to see him since we don't get to talk much because of the time difference and the bad connection he has. we don't really know what we're going to be doing. probably just hang out at home and go out a few times. hopefully i'll be able to see my friends over a few times over break - for the most part, most of them will be staying here in kansas. i'm really looking forward to having a week and a half off school!

tell me about your weekend.

my weekend was great! in the beginning, i had relay for life, and it was a lot of fun. i don't really have a favorite part of it - it was just really fun to be around my friends, knowing we're helping a good cause. i also can't believe we raised over $213,000! i'm really looking forward to doing this again next year. when i got home at seven in the morning, i crashed and woke up in the late afternoon. i finished up some homework, and went back to sleep. sunday morning i went to church, and then i spent the rest of the day with my boyfriend. we went to amc and say big hero 6 (which was hilarious. i totally recommend it), the mall, and then met up with a friend and went to chili's. i really enjoyed my weekend!

if you were the principal of bvhs for a week, what would it look like? what would change? why?

if i was the principal, i wouldn't change too much. i think mr. bacon is very good at what he does. he sets a positive attitude and a positive environment for the student body. one of the things i would want to do is make sure students are happy about the way the teach, and make sure the teachers are actually teaching (i've had several that don't do much). i would also fix the school wifi, allow seniors to leave for lunch, and i would allow students to change their classes just to be with a teacher they like (teaching style, etc. i want my students to know they have good teachers).

give 10 pieces of advice on how to create an amazing presentation.

1. limit your words. don't use paragraphs of information in your presentation.
2. make sure your information is correct. look at multiple websites to make sure they are all in agreement - don't look at just one.
3. if you're expressing an opinion, make sure to state it's an opinion. otherwise, it will appear as false/biased information.
4. simplify, don't have a ton of crazy things all going on at once (bright background with bright texts and colorful images, etc).
5. add visuals. many people tend to remember and understand information better if they have a clear visual or image to go along with it.
6. don't put too much information on one slide. unless you're limited to the number of slides you can use, you're free to use several.
7. make sure the topics and information on one single slide are related to one another.
8. have a theme. this will make the overall appearance of your presentation look much better and neater.
9. triple check to make sure there are no grammatical errors or typos.
10. don't read only what is written on a slide. elaborate while speaking.

tell me about your weekend.

this weekend was pretty good. on friday, i attended all three basketball games (girls varsity, boys varsity, and the teacher game). the teacher game was by far my favorite though i wish it was a full game and not just the first half. the two photos above were taken at the game - the one of the left is me with my friends noah and nick while the one on the right is me and my boyfriend. saturday was a super lazy day for me and i really didn't do anything. sunday i had a slow morning, and then went to work.

1. infographics help readers understand things visually or with visual relations. include plenty of images and icons
2. infographics are preferred over plain text as they make the information more enjoyable for whoever it is reading
3. to make an infographic: idea and research -> story and design -> distribute and promote
4. spend time working on all the little details because they will make a big difference
5. make sure the order your infographic goes in makes sense

tell me about your weekend. give me a story, something funny that happened, an experiencing you had, the way you felt, etc. include photos!

i had a pretty busy weekend. on friday, i attended the first varsity basketball game and played in the pep band. once it was over, my friend and i went to visit my boyfriend at work (which was an interesting experience - his coworkers are pretty funny).

on saturday, i spend the first half of the day doing homework and studying. at around five pm, i started getting ready for a birthday dinner party. it was for our family friend who was turning 60. it was a lot of fun - the dinner was hosted at pinstripes and the food was amazing. they also hired a belly dancer which i thought was hilarious (egyptian tradition, i guess). after words i went home and was finally able to sleep.

sunday, i spent the whole morning and part of the afternoon doing even more homework and studying. at two i had work. it wasn't too busy which was nice, so i spent most of the time there talking with my coworkers. after i got off, i hung out with my boyfriend for a couple of hours, and headed home.

my ideal curriculum would be one where 1) nearly everything taught is guaranteed to help us later in life and 2) we are able to choose the courses we take in order to build onto what we want to do (like college). i find that a lot of things i learn in school won't help me in life - my brother graduated from college and confirmed that this is true. for me, because i plan to major in psychology, i would need to take more courses revolving around that one topic, but also taking basic general education classes. my ideal schedule would probably include a statistics class, english, and multiple different types of psychology courses.

for me personally, i feel like i learn better when i'm not being lectured. i'd rather do something hands on or learn visually, with few reference notes. open class discussions are also very useful, as you get to hear everyone's opinions. i wouldn't mind too much homework. the only think i would change is the actual content of the homework. right now, most of the stuff i'm getting is just busy work and doesn't actually help me learn. the last thing i would change is standardized testing - aka a way of measuring someones level of intelligence on how well they can fill in an oval. tests should be more in context rather than just reiterating words and phrases (for example, vocabulary - instead of asking what something means, make the student correctly use it in a phrase or sentence).

overall, my ideal method is very, very different than how school is right now.

tell me what you believe this cartoon is trying to say. do you agree or disagree with this idea? try and look at this from two different perspectives. what is your perspective? what would be an adult/teacher's perspective?

this cartoon is showing different stereotypes as far as education goes around the world. one perspective is agreeing with these stereotypes, and attempting to enforce them. (ex - all asians are good at math, all indians are good and the sciences, and all americans are lazy and not good at any subject). however, my perspective is different. i think this is a pretty racist cartoon. this is not because i'm american and i don't want to be viewed as lazy and uneducated - i also believe it's racist to assume all asians are good at math, etc. the perspectives of adults and teacher will vary, depending on the person. again, some will believe this is true while other believe this is a racist and ignorant way to look at things.

think about the quote above. what does this mean to you? how could this apply to your life? how could this apply to your school work? i would love to give you less work in class if it meant you were going to focus harder on the work. do you think you would get more out of it? would that work for you? why or why not?

i think this quote is talking about focusing on the quality over the quantity of things. sometimes the benefit is not just equal, but even greater. i agree with this quote - for example, homework. students get assigned so much homework that there is just not enough time to complete it, so they scribble down random answers or google them in order to just get it done, and no more than that. i remember sophomore year when i took philosophy, we were rarely assigned any homework (probably ten assignments for the whole semester), but you could tell almost each and every student including myself put in all the effort they could into those ten assignments. the same goes for sociology. we had just a few assignments, but the majority of students put a lot of effort into it. however, in other classes such as math or english, students are getting assignment multiple assignments every day, so they turn to copying answers from friend or from online. i believe that there is a certain number of things that need to be accomplished (depending on the subject or work it deals with), but for me, in most cases quality rules over quantity.

tell me all about your weekend.

my weekend was mostly taken up by performing in 42nd street. we had a performance on thursday, friday, and twice on saturday. the saturday night show was probably my favorite because we had a great audience and it was completely packed. i would've stayed for strike and the after party, but i was way too tired (saturday was a long day - act in the morning and then go perform in two shows almost back to back). i was hoping to have sunday to relax but it was kind of the opposite - i have work all day and then i had to come home and finish homework and study for a test. overall, i pretty good weekend. however, i'm really looking forward to this four day weekend. i'll have a ton more time and i'll probably just hang out with my friends.

feb. 6

tell me about some interesting things you have learned about your global issue so far. what have you learned that you didn't know before?

the most interesting (funny) thing i found so far was this article that was actually very against allowing the lgbt community to adopt children. one of their biggest points was trying to prove the lgbt people die at an earlier age the heterosexual people - not just by a few years, but by decades - and therefore cannot be good parents. this article claimed that out of interviewing 22,000 people, the median death age for the lgbt community was between 30-40 years old while straight people generally died at a median of 70-80 years. they also tried to say that the oldest lesbian they found in that group of 22 thousand people was only 49 years old. overall, that article made me laugh a bit.

on a more serious note, before researching this topic, i never actually knew which countries and states legally allow the lgbt community to adopt. sweden, the netherlands, and south africa have all made it legal. however, inside of america, lgbt couples still have to apply to be allowed to adopt. in some states, it's completely illegal.

you haven't had a chance to tell me about your sweetheart weekend yet - tell me about it now! include photos if you have them. even if you just laid around on the couch and watched netflix, tell me all about it.

i didn't go to sweetheart but instead i had my birthday dinner. i went to ra and paciugo's with my mom and brother (my dad wasn't there - he is currently on a business trip in romania). i received my birthday gifts which were a diamond necklace from my mom and a couple t shirts from my brother. also, yesterday i found a package in room from my dad and inside was a mug, fuzzy socks, european chocolate, and a few other things from romania. on sunday i went to paradise diner with a few friends for brunch. later, i went home and completed a practice act and then went over to my friends house for a super bowl party. overall, it was a pretty great weekend.

what is email? when do you use email in your own personal life? list reasons and ways that people use email. what do you know about "email etiquette"? explain.

email is a type of communication over the internet. i personally use email to receive notifications about band and school. i also use to ask teachers any questions i had about homework or tests. others may use email to communicate with coworkers, managers, companies, and family to discuss important projects and upcoming events. i don't believe i know anything about email etiquette.

finish this sentence "10 years from now i will be...."

...hopefully working in my current desired major (psychology, specifically working as an industrial organizational psychologist). i'll be 26 (a few days shy of 27) so i hope to be living comfortably. i'm not sure where i want to live - i kind of enjoy kansas because it's quiet, but at the same time, i would like to experience something new. i also hope that since i won't be in school, i'll have a lot more time to do the things i feel like i never have time for - traveling, painting, drawing, taking a day to relax and enjoy the weather when it's nice out. despite what i'll be doing in 10 years, i know it'll be okay. also, i'll have a kitten.

jan. 27

yesterday i had you choose a global issue and you wrote about it on your blog. today on your blog i want you to tell me about two different perspectives of your global issue. are there people for and against your issue? do people disagree on your issue? is it a topic that can cause controversy? look at the issue for two different perspectives. tell me about those perspectives.

yes, my topic (feminism/sexism/women's rights) generally has two different views. the first view would be people who are feminists themselves and believe that the genders still are not equal. these people look globally - not just within our country. they do not tolerate sexist jokes and want/believe the equal treatment of all genders (politically and socially).

on the other hand, there are the people who are anti-feminism and genuinely believe that all women have just as many rights as men do, and some people (usually referring to a specific country or culture) don't believe women and men should be treated as equals.

this topic is fairly controversial as the term "feminism" has been given a bad connotation.

sexism, feminism, and women's rights

1. without doing any research, what background do you currently have on this issue?
though laws were passed prohibiting things such as unequal pay between men and women, it still happens everyday. statistics show that, depending on race and background, women get paid 10-60% less than the average working man. most women also face sexism nearly everyday without most people realizing it (catcalling, "you can't hit a girl," etc). the united states is not be the most prominently sexist country, and people fail to look outside of that. in saudi arabia, women aren't allowed to drive cars. while some countries prohibit women from working certain jobs, some countries don't allow women to work at all. also, many middle eastern countries deprive women of education and believe that their sole reason to live is to get married young and have children. they are being treated like objects, and not like human beings.

2. what do you want to know about this issue?
i would like to learn what laws and rules have been recently enforced or are currently being discussed that will eventually rid sexism. i would also like to know ways that society as a whole can do to help this issue. and last, i would like to learn all the different opinions on this issue and the people they come from (for example, how females view feminism vs. how males view feminism).

3. why did you choose this issue? had it effected your life? is it something you are passionate about? explain.
i guarantee that every female has faced sexism one time or another in her life. it's an issue nearly all of us face. living in the united states isn't that bad thought there are still vivid acts of sexism (how the media portrays women, gender roles). however, there are other countries in dire need of help with this issue because, as said before, there are females being denied education and jobs. just being we say everyone is equal does not mean that it's true (for example, drugs are illegal but are still used and transported everyday. murder is illegal, but people get murdered everyday, and some people even get away with it especially depending on their race).

update: i have changed my topic to lgbt adoption.

last week i asked your to "think differently" and push yourself to be uncommon with your psa project using google slides. why do you think i asked you to do that? what is the point? why not just use bullets and headers? explain.

bullets and headers are seen on nearly all presentations and get extremely boring after a while. also, when reading bullets/a list, it sounds so mechanical and robotic while psa's are supposed to make you feel certain emotions. the animations also add to emotion - fast moving text get people excited, while making text fade in and out slowly gives the viewer a more upset feeling. psa's the way we're doing it also allows everything to flow smoothly without the need of a click. trying new presentation techniques also will improve future projects and appeal better to who ever is viewing it.

the only thing i have to say about kids these days is about how quick they are to think and make decisions. they take such serious events and topics so lightly and heavily emphasize the unimportant things. they don't always hold on the things that'll help them later in life. yes, they're lazy somethings, but aren't we all? and yes, they may be technology addicts but in the day and age we live in, technology should be used to its fullest potential.

what is a public service announcement (psa)? what do psa's do? what makes a good psa? how can you get someone to take action after watching a psa? what is you psa idea? explain in detail.

a public service announcement is a message to inform people of an issue (ex: drunk driving, drugs, smoking, etc). a good psa flows smoothly and is fairly short. most psa's are intended to move the viewer and make them feel some sort of emotion. the psa i am currently working on is going to be over drunk driving/underage drinking.

on friday, i had pit orchestra rehearsal for two hours and then a played at the second basketball game. in between those two events, i want to ra sushi and paciugo's with some friends. on saturday, i had pit orchestra in the morning, and i spend the rest of the day studying for my act. on sunday, i didn't do much besides go to work, but it was all right because i had a friend visit me while there. on monday, i pit in the morning, and then i went to sprouts and goodwill with a friend.

i'm currently a junior at bvhs. the main activity/class i'm involved in is band (marching first semester, sit-down second semester), however i am also in national music honors society and gsa. this school year, my favorite class has been sociology with mrs. cowen, which is the class i looked forward to this year. last year, i took philosophy which was also fun and engaging. next year, i'm pretty excited to take ap biology and psychology/ap psychology.

what are your thoughts on this class so far? easy? hard? informative? frustrating? what have you learned so far? what do you want to learn? explain yourself.

so far, this class is super easy. everything we've learned were things i've already previously known or done before. i personally think i'm fairly good with computers, so figuring things out isn't too hard. the only the new thing i was introduced to was this website (blogger) but using it isn't hard at all. i also never really realized how useful google drive could be until this class began. later in the semester, i hope to learn and discover more things that'll make using the computer simpler.

read this small newspaper clipping and then write a blog post about it. what are your thoughts? how does it make you feel? do you agree? disagree? explain yourself.

though i agree that some teenagers need to begin developing things for themselves rather than relying on their parents or society, it was told in a harsh manner. some teenagers are put under a ridiculous amount of stress for simply being asked what they're going to do with their life and that needs to be accounted for in this situation. sometimes, they also need a helping a hand - a small push in the right direction. yes, the people telling us to grow up were once teenagers too, but everyday new situations arise that didn't apply to them back then.
